As you are likely aware, replacing those old, drafty windows in your home is one of the best ways to lower your heating and air conditioning costs and reduce your need for energy.  Not only that, but over time, old windows get difficult to open and you may notice condensation inside the glass.  To be completely transparent about it, replacing the windows in your home is likely going to require a fairly large investment of money on your part.  Although there does not seem to be a lot of complexity to a window, the truth is they are quite complex and fairly expensive.

Good quality replacement windows in your home help to protect the inside of your home from the elements like wind and water and some windows do a better job at it than others.  Pretty much any new replacement window that you will buy today will have no problem keeping out rain and the majority of the wind, but it certainly does not mean that all windows are created equal.  Often you get what you pay for when it comes to purchasing replacement windows.  If you want a good quality, energy efficient replacement window, it may be somewhat expensive.  The good news though is that with energy efficient windows, you will recoup the cost of the new windows in the money that you will save each month on your utility bills and you will be helping to create a cleaner environment by not using as much energy.

When looking for new replacement windows for your home, there are a few things to keep in mind so you get a window that will meet your needs for many years to come.

Thermal Insulation – Check a windows insulating properties to make sure it will keep the heat inside your home on a cold day, rather than allowing the heat to escape out the window.

Tinting or Solar Control – During the day, especially in the summer, heat from the sun can come through the windows and heat the air up inside the home. Look for windows that do have some sort of UV protection.

Warranty – Check the windows for their warranty information so that if you have a problem with the windows in the future, you can have them repaired or replaced at no charge.

Certifications – One of the ways to make sure that a window that you are looking at buying meets certain quality criteria is to look for certifications from AAMA and also efficiency certifications from NFRC.

Many older windows that you would be replacing are made mostly of wood, but many more options exist today. Aluminum, Vinyl, Steel and Fiberglass are among the most popular options for new replacement windows.  If you want to retain a certain classic look, you can also still purchase new wood windows as well, and then paint them to your liking.

There are few things in your home that can have such a huge impact on the cost of ownership, like windows can.  Take your time and do you research so that when it comes time to replace your windows, you purchase windows that will not only look good, but will help to lower the overall energy needs of your home, making way for a greener future.
